The Atelier
A contemporary art atelier producing highly collectible, avant-garde canine portraiture for the considered interior.
The work began with a straightforward provocation: what happens if the canine subject is granted exactly the same treatment a portrait studio would extend to a head of state, a couturier, or a difficult cultural figure — the same lighting discipline, the same compositional rigour, the same refusal to flatter?
The answer, it turns out, is that the humour survives. It simply changes register. A Doberman rendered in true chiaroscuro is not a joke about a dog in a costume; it is a portrait that happens to be of a Doberman, and it holds a wall the way a portrait should. The comedy is left entirely to the viewer. Nothing in the frame acknowledges it.
Every work is developed as a composition first. Styling, palette and posture are resolved before the subject is ever considered as a breed. The atelier's interest is in mass, drape, light and the particular authority a face acquires when it declines to perform — the same interest that governs any serious portraiture.
Making
Editions are printed as archival pigment on 310gsm 100% cotton rag — acid-free, lignin-free, with a natural white surface and a subtle vellum tooth that holds detail without gloss. Pigment inks are rated in excess of a century under museum display conditions. Framing is executed in solid blackened oak, hand-mitred, with 99% UV-filtering acrylic glazing, assembled to order in Europe.
Each work is issued in an edition of fifty per scale, hand-numbered in the lower margin, and accompanied by a cotton-rag Certificate of Authenticity carrying a blind embossed seal. Editions are retired permanently on completion. Nothing is reprinted.
Acquisition
Works may be acquired directly, or through the atelier's advisory service, which considers wall dimension, ambient light and the existing contents of a room before recommending scale and finish. Collectors and interior professionals are invited to write.
